Abstract

Introduction: the purpose was to determine the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) following screening in diabetic patients.

Methods: this was a cross-sectional study in which consenting diabetic patients were screened for diabetic retinopathy, on the occasion of the world diabetes day 2016. Data collected included age, sex, duration of diabetes, type of diabetes, glycated haemoglobin values, visual acuity, intraocular pressure and the presence of DR on dilated fundus examination. Fluorescein angiography was done for grading.

Results: we included 82 patients of whom 69.5% were females. The mean age was 56.5 ± 15.4 years. Type 2 diabetic patients made up 91.5% of the cases. The mean duration of diabetes was 7.3 ± 6.5 years. Thirty five percent had never had an eye examination before. Eleven patients (13.4%) were found to have diabetic retinopathy on fundoscopy.

Conclusion: though the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy was low, thirty five percent of known diabetics had never had their eyes examined for ocular complications. Patient awareness and physician coordination should be emphasized to increase the eye examination rate.
