Introduction: anaemia is defined as blood haemoglobin level 11g/dl. Worldwide, anaemia affects more than 50% of pregnant women with rate between 23% and 52%. Anaemia control is an intervention towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals 3; which is to reduce maternal and child mortality. In 2011, anaemia accounted for 20% of maternal deaths in Ghana. We reviewed anaemia in pregnancy surveillance data to assess its magnitude and distribution in the Upper West Akim district from 2011-2015.
Methods: we conducted secondary data analysis on anaemia in pregnancy in Upper West Akim district. Data were obtained from the District Health Information Management System II (DHIMS 2) database and Antenatal care register. Data was managed and analyzed using MS Excel. Univariate analyses were expressed as frequencies and proportions.
Results: a total of 3,137 anaemia in pregnancy cases were recorded. Higher proportion, 2,077 (66.2%) of the anaemia in pregnancy cases came from Adeiso sub-district. The year 2015 recorded the highest, 872(27.8%) anaemia in pregnancy cases. There were no anaemia in pregnancy deaths.
Conclusion: increasing trend of anaemia in pregnancy in the Upper West Akim district. Public health action includes enhanced education on anaemia and nutrition at antenatal clinics in the Upper West Akim district.
