The Ministry of Health in conjunction with Makerere University School of Public Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently implementing a capacity building program known as the Uganda Public Health Fellowship Program (PHFP). This is a two-year training-in-service program aimed at equipping public health professionals with the skills they need to manage public health challenges. This program trains the next generation public health leaders; the field epidemiology track aims to train Uganda’s disease detectives, much like CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officers. We organized a one-day Uganda National Field Epidemiology Conference on November 14th, 2016 at Sheraton Hotel, Kampala. At this conference, 1st and 2nd Year Fellows presented investigations and epidemiologic studies they conducted since they joined the Fellowship Program. Through these investigations and studies, important public health problems facing the nation were unveiled and strategies to address them proposed. This conference presented opportunity for national and international experts to discuss and propose solutions. This was the 2nd Field Epidemiology Conference in Uganda and was attended by important dignitaries from the key partner institutions including Ministry of Health, UN agencies, Embassies, University officials, representatives from districts as well as other national and international delegates.
