Introduction: neonatal seizure is one of the neurological disorders contributing to a high mortality and morbidity rate in newborns. Parents are usually the first to be implicated in the management of neonatal seizures as they mostly occur at home. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the level of neonatal seizure risk awareness, prevention, and management among mothers in Ogbomoso Local Government Area of Southwest, Nigeria.
Method: a descriptive cross-sectional design using a self-developed questionnaire was used to elicit responses from 359 mothers selected by simple random sampling technique. Data analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23. Data were subjected to descriptive statistics to generate the frequency and percentage of the responses. Inferential statistics was done using chi-square test at 0.05 level of significance. The results were presented using tables, graphs, and texts as applicable.
Result: findings showed that majority of the respondents demonstrated a high level of awareness of neonatal seizure disorders in newborn; its risk factors, prevention and management, as 274 respondents (76%) reported high awareness of neonatal seizure disorders, its risk factors 273(76%), prevention 223(62.1%) and management 291(81.1%). There was significant relationship between age (p=0.000), marital status ( p=0.018), educational status (p=0.000) and the awareness of risk factors of seizure disorders in newborn
Implication to Nursing and Conclusion: health education by nurses play a major role in the awareness of mothers on causes, prevention and management of neonatal seizure disorders. Though the findings revealed a high level of awareness of neonatal seizure among mothers, there is need for improved maternal neonatal seizure awareness through quality education during antenatal, postnatal and child welfare visits. Also, in the community, health awareness walk, television shows and radio talks on neonatal seizure can be organized by nurses to correct misconceptions about neonatal seizure.
