Factors influencing the choice of nursing as a career among first year nursing students in Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti

Introduction: the choice of a career is one of the most vital decisions that man has to make in his lifetime. The right career choice for the students entering into the professional education is critical having high impact on their professional life and future achievement. Also, Professional perception has a great influence on the development of nursing students and the future quality of nursing. This study investigated the the factors influencing the choice of nursing as a profession among first year nursing students of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti.
Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional design was used to select all of the 120 first year students using the purposive sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was a self-structured questionnaire. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistic in the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.
Results: findings indicated that most of the respondents believe that most of the respondents are female, they are within the range of nursing is a noble profession and admired by many people in the society. Most chose nursing as a profession because of job security, good pay, self-actualization and love for helping people. Fewer students were influenced by contacts with practicing nurses, friends and parents.
Conclusion: it was also concluded that first year nursing students in the Afe Babalola University have a positive perception of nursing and their roles. Meanwhile, a significant association was observed between the gender of the respondents and their perception of nursing profession. There is need for nurses and stakeholders to project a positive image of nursing profession in the society and address the gender inequality in it so as to attract more quality minds into the profession.
