Introduction: to assess the oral health behaviour and management of dental diseases among residents of Idikan, Ibadan, Oyo state.
Methods: a cross-sectional survey of adult residents of Idikan was done using convenience sampling. A total of 93 residents of Idikan were interviewed via interviewer administered semi-structured questionnaires. Data was analysed using SPSS and the level of significance was set at p = 0.05.
Results: the age of participants ranged from 18 to 70 years with a mean age of 39.66 ± 13.232 and 39 (41.9%) were male. A total of 52 (55.9%) participants had experienced toothache while 41 (44.1%) had not. Majority of those who had experienced toothache used drugs (30.8%) prescribed by a chemist (51.9%); only a few (23.1 %) visited a dentist. Twelve (12.9%) had experienced bleeding gums of which 3 (25%) used herbs and another 3 (25%) used tomato with TCP antiseptic and spirit. Twelve participants (12.9%) reported having had mobile teeth of which most did nothing (33.3%), used warm saline mouthwash (25%) or used drugs (16.7%).
Conclusion: toothache was the most common dental problem encountered by the residents of Idikan followed closely by bleeding gums and mobile teeth. However, only a few sought dental treatment. Regular health education during dental outreaches with free dental treatment would help improve the oral health of residents of Idikan.
