Introduction: the aim of this study was to assess patients' perception of the communication between them and their dentist, and to determine the level of patient satisfaction after treatment
Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was done using 100 patients from a tertiary institution (Lagos University Teaching Hospital) and 100 patients from a secondary institution (Randle General Hospital). Data collection was by interviewer-administered questionnaires consisting of communication assessment tool and a scale to rate satisfaction level. Data was analysed using Epi info 3.5.1.
Results: all 200 questionnaires were returned. At the end of the study, the communication assessment tool used revealed the communication levels as excellent 127 (63.5%), Good 65 (32.5%) and Fair 2 (1%), however patients attending the tertiary institution had more excellent communication with their dentist (74%). Most of the respondents 198 (99.0%) perceived that the dentist understood their complaints and 193 (96.5%) felt comfortable with the dentist. The overall level of satisfaction of patients in this study was graded as mostly excellent 117 (58.5%). A significantly higher proportion of patients attending Randle General Hospital (66%) expressed greater satisfaction compared to the LUTH (51%).
Conclusion: findings from this study showed that communication is better in Lagos University Teaching Hospital while overall satisfaction level is better amongst patients attending Randle General Hospital due to other factors in relation to communication skill. It is therefore indicated that dentists needs to be continuously trained on communication skills and interpersonal relationship.
