Introduction: the aim of this study was to determine the pattern of presentation of oral diseases at a family dental clinic in Ibadan.
Methods: this retrospective study was conducted at a family dental clinic in Egbeda, Ibadan. Data on socio-demographic characteristics, primary diagnosis and treatments given were retrieved from case notes of patients presenting at the clinic, from January 2014 to June 2016. Data obtained was analysed using SPSS Version 23.
Results: a total of 1015 patients were seen with their ages ranging from 1 year to 119 years (mean age: 39.1 ± 19.9 years). The majority (63.3%) were adults and 57.4% among them were females. Dependants and unskilled workers constituted 80% of the patients. Dental caries and its sequelae (32.0%) and periodontal diseases (24.6%) were the most prevalent diagnoses. Tooth extraction (20.2%) represented the most common treatment received. Age has a significant effect on primary diagnosis; adult patients (41.1%) presented more often with acute apical periodontitis due to caries (p = 0.0001). A higher proportion of females (28.7%) than males (22.6%) was also found to have acute apical periodontitis due to caries (p = 0.04).
Conclusion: dental caries and its sequelae were the predominant oral diseases, with diverse age group presentation. Prevention of oral diseases and early presentation/utilization of dental services should be emphasized, to reduce its enormous burden in Egbeda local government.
