Introduction: the aim of this study was to determine the level of satisfaction of patients who had scaling and polishing at the periodontology clinic of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria.
Methods: a 17-item, self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. It sought answers regarding the patients’ satisfaction with scaling and polishing performed at the clinic. Data entry and analysis were done using statistical package for social sciences (version 21.0, SPSS, Chicago, IL, USA).
Results: 293 (97.7%) of the 300 administered questionnaires, were properly filled. One hundred and twenty-two (41.6%) of the participants had scaling and polishing done with manual instruments alone, 142 (48.5%) had ultrasonic scaling, while 29 (9.9%) had both types done. Of those who had both methods, a higher proportion were more satisfied with the ultrasonic (53.5%) than the manual method (17.2%), p < 0.001. However, (31.0%) were indifferent.
Conclusion: this study showed that a higher proportion of patients preferred the ultrasonic scaling to the manual method. We recommend that ultrasonic scalers be supplied in adequate numbers to meet the demands of our patients in the periodontology clinic, university college hospital, Ibadan.
