Introduction: the aim of this study was to determine the correlation between nutritional status and oral health among geriatrics in Ile-Ife.

Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study design and random sampling method using an interviewer based questionnaire that determined their eating profile, was used to obtain data from 75 adults whose ages ranged between 60 and 99 years in Ile-Ife, Osun State. The oral examinations were done to determine the periodontal status (CAL), Caries (DMFT), and Oral hygiene (OHI) status. The weight (kg) and height (m) were measured to determine the BMI of the subjects.

Results: most of the respondent were between the ages of 71-80 years and were widows, and most were Christians and traders. Also, most had difficulty chewing hard food like meat, fried yam, and bone with 30 teeth in their mouth and 5 occluding pairs but had 3 squared meal hence, their BMI was within normal limit. Half of the respondents had DMFT score of 0, mild CAL with fair oral hygiene. There was a strong positive correlation between their eating profile, posterior occluding pairs and no of teeth present (p > 0.05) with no significant relationship between their eating profile, BMI, oral hygiene and CAL (p < 0.05).

Conclusion: the number of teeth present and occluding pairs is related to choice of food intake, hence affecting intake of essential nutrients among geriatrics. Training and integration of dieticians and dental professionals in the total health care and management of geriatrics.
