Introduction: quality of life and patient satisfaction data are important issues in estimating the outcome of laparoscopic surgery. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relative quality of life and satisfaction of a sample of patients operated on for groin hernia by laparoscopic approach.

Methods: prospective, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, controlled trial including consecutive adult patients with inguinal hernia treated by Total Extraperitoneal (TEP) approach, with implantation of a sterilized mesh (MMS) or a conventional polypropylene mesh (MCP). Complication rates, immediate and mid-term satisfaction of the operated patients were studied. Patients were evaluated at 5, 10, 15 days, 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 months postoperatively.

Results: sixty-two patients, 48 men and 14 women with a sex ratio of 3.4 and a mean age of 48.52 (18-77) years, were randomized, 32 receiving MMS and 30 receiving MBP. The groups were similar in terms of age distribution and occupational details. The complication rate was 11.29%, 2 cases of conversion (1/32 MM), due to external factors were recorded and net removal for early obstruction was observed. The follow-up rate was 100% after 3 months and 96.77% after 24 months. From the short and medium term evaluation of the patients, the overall satisfaction rate of the management was 98.38%.

Conclusion: the majority of the patients who followed up and who answered the satisfaction questionnaire are very satisfied and have resumed a normal life course 2 years after the intervention.
