Introduction: at the onset of each wave of the COVID-19 pandemic clinical pictures of deceased patients are paramount to determine the clinical features of the disease. The objective was to describe the epidemiological, clinical, biological, and therapeutic profile and outcome of patients who died from COVID-19 at Bafoussam Regional Hospital.
Methods: this cross-sectional included medical records of patients who died from COVID-19 at Bafoussam Regional Hospital from March 16, 2020, to December 27, 2020. We collected clinical, biological, treatment, and outcome variables. Descriptive statistics were computed and Kaplan Meier survival analysis was performed.
Results: sixty-two (62) cases were included. Mean age (SD) was 64.8 (12.8) years and 69.8% were female. Most cases were 66 years old (46.0%). Clinically, 19.4% were smokers; 69.4% had at least one comorbidities (hypertension (40.3%) and diabetes (33.9%)) and 30.6% had at least 2 comorbidities. The most frequent signs were cough (67.7%) and dyspnoea (65.1%). Almost all patients (96.8%) had severe acute respiratory syndrome, 17.7% presented with sepsis. Rapid diagnostic test results were positive in 37.1% and C-reactive protein was positive in 71.0% of cases on admission.
Conclusion: most deaths from Cvoid19 occurred among old patients with hypertension or diabetes. Only a third of them had a positive rapid diagnostic test on admission.
