Introduction: the satisfaction of health service beneficiaries and health facility users is essential to Cameroon's Health Sector Strategy. The objective of this abstract is to measure the satisfaction of beneficiaries of health services in health facilities in Cameroon.
Methods: a cross-sectional study was carried out from September 2022 to June 2023 in 69 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th category health facilities in 08 regions of Cameroon (Adamaoua, Centre, East, Far North, Littoral, North, West and South). The study population consisted of patients or carers of children/adolescents receiving healthcare services who had consented to participate. The adapted PSQ-18 questionnaire was used to collect the data. The variable of interest ‘beneficiary satisfaction’, based on a 05-point Likert scale, was grouped into 07 sub-categories. The mean of the items in each sub-category was calculated. The one-way ANOVA enabled a multiple comparison of satisfaction by region, type, and category of health facility, and Gamma regression identified factors associated with beneficiary satisfaction (95% CI and p < 0.05). Data analysis was carried out using Excel 2016 and SPSS 27.
Results: in total, 559 participants were enrolled at a median age of 30(24 - 35) years, 76.6% of whom were female. Overall beneficiary satisfaction was 69.8%. Health service users were more satisfied in the West (p=0.001) and less satisfied in the East (p=0.002) and Littoral (p=0.003). Similarly, they were more satisfied in 6th and 3rd category facilities (p<0.05) compared to 2nd, 4th, and 5th category facilities and less satisfied in public facilities (p=0.002) compared to private facilities.
Conclusion: beneficiary satisfaction with health services, an indicator of quality and success in health care, remains low in Cameroon's health facilities. A radical improvement in the provision of all services will significantly increase the satisfaction of health service users.
